Statue of Liberty (more formally, Liberty Enlightening the World, and more colloquially, Lady Liberty) is a structure located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, presented to the United States on the centennial of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence as a gift from France. It was designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and gets its green coloring from patination of the outer copper covering. The statue is world-renowned for being the first thing sea-borne visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans see upon entering New York Harbor and has been known as a beacon of freedom to much of the world. It earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1984.

Attitudes and laws around U.S. immigration have vacillated between welcoming and restrictive since the country's beginning[4]. The women's suffrage movement, African-Americans and Chinese immigrants criticized the statue as representative of a nation that was not yet free for everyone. While the Statue of Liberty has, for most of its time in New York’s harbor, been framed as a symbol of immigration in America, at the time of its assembly, the country was just beginning to formally limit the number of people who could immigrate each year [3]. The 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act was voted, this act was the first in American history to place broad restrictions on certain immigrant groups [4].
