Podere Santa Pia is a large old rambling Tuscan farmhouse, located on a hill among olive groves, Mediterranean macchia, and vineyards in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. A winding scenic road, just outside the village of Castiglioncello Bandini, is leading to this former cloister, hidden in a seduced valley.
The surrounding hills, crossed with dirt roads and secret paths are ideal for hiking.

The selected trails are all within easy reach of Podere Santa Pia. Enjoy a walk on the strada bianche or dirt roads between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Montalcino or the abbey of Sant'Antimo. You can enjoy some exclusive wine tours and tasting experiences on the southern slopes of Montalcino. Or have lunch at Il Pozzo or Il Leccio, or go to da Pino in Sant'Angelo Scalo for delicious everyday fare.

Montalcino - Abbazia di Sant'Antimo is an itinerary in the great scenery of Brunello vineyards in the Val d’Orcia between Montalcino and Castelnuovo dell'Abate and  Sant'Antimo - Sant'Angelo in Colle  explores the scenery between Sant'Antimo and Sant'Angelo in Colle. There is no difficulty in following the tracks. And a visit to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, one of the highlights of romanesque architecture, is a must.
You are in the midst of some great wineries. Plan in advance to arrange a visit to one of these great Brunello wineries in the surroundings of Castelnuovo dell’Abate or on the way to Sant'Angelo in Colle. 1 - Montalcino circular walk | Walking around Montalcino through the famous Brunello vineyards | 8,61 km

This itinerary starts at the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso, or on Parcheggio Viale Strozzi, on Via Pietra Strozzi (nearby the church).
Behind the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso, there is a small square with a marvelous view over the Val d'Orcia in the direction of Siena.

You are in the midst of some great wineries: Padelletti, Salvioni, Silvio Nardi, with a winery established in the 50’s, and Castiglion del Bosco are all nearby. Or check out Castello Romitorio, owned by famous Transavanguardia artist Sandro Chia. And through the vineyards of Il Poggiolo and Il Palazzone, and a wine tasting tour on one or two wineries could be a good idea.

2 - Montalcino - Abbazia di Sant'Antimo | 10,92 km    
Itinerary in the great scenery of Brunello vineyards between Montalcino and Castelnuovo dell'Abate. There is a stunning moment when you reach the Abbey of Sant'Antimo.

This itinerary starts at the Fortezza in Montalcino, or at one of the former gates, the Porta al Cassero.

You walk along dirt roads, through vineyards and woodlands to the simple beauty of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, stopping off along the route to visit the small pieve in Villa a Tolli.
Your walk finishes at the very impressive Romanesque Abbey of Sant'Antimo.

In Castelnuovo dell’Abate you can take a bus back to Montalcino. The bus stop is in front of Trattoria Bassomundo. Or you can walk back. There is a circular walk from Montalcino to Sant'Antimo and back again.

3 - Abbazia di Sant'Antimo - Sant'Angelo in Colle  | 9,70 km    
This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Brunello vineyards in the Val d’Orcia between Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Sant'Angelo in Colle, walking on the famous strade bianche or dirt roads. Wineries along the trail include Poggio di Sotto, La Palazzetta, and Uccelliera in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, and Ciacci Piccolomini D'Aragona, la Cantina Mastrojanni, Sesta di Sopra and Lisini further along the road.

Your walk finishes near the Pieve Di San Michele Arcangelo, on the square Piazza Castello where you will find two excellent restaurants, Il Pozzo and Il Leccio.

6 - Montalcino - San Quirico d'Orcia | 13,07 km    
Itinerary in the great scenery of the Val d’Orcia, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 26 km north of Podere Santa Pia. This itinerary starts in Montalcino at the Porta al Cassero, and takes you to some of the most beautiful valleys of the Val ‘Orcia, dotted with silvery olive orchards, small villages, and vineyards, passing some of finest wineries on the northern slopes of Montalcino. San Quirico d'Orcia with the honey-colored Collegiata, famous for its three beautifully carved portals, and the smaller Chiesetta di Santa Maria Assunta, also known as Santa Maria or Santa Maria ad Hortos as it is surrounded by gardens, the Horti Leonini and the Giardino delle Rose.
This itinerary ends at the Piazza Garibaldi were the Chiesa San Francesco stands in front of the entrance of the Horti Leonini gardens, a classic Italian-style garden, created around 1580 by Diomede Leoni.

7 - From Montalcino to Buonconvento | Hiking trails in the Arbia and Ombrone valleys    

Itinerary in the great scenery of the Val d’Orcia and the Crete Senesi . This itinerary starts on Parcheggio Viale Strozzi. You leave the city through Porta Burelli. From Porta Burelli you follow the Strada Comunale del Canalicchio. At km 9 you cross the Via Cassia, turn left and after 300 meters turn right, in the direction of Chiusure and the Abbey Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
Being so close to Buonconvento, a visit to this picturesque medieval village is a must.

This is an extended walk from walk no 7. You can divide the long walk to Monte Oliveto Maggiore in Chiusure into two parts, a first part from Montalcino to Buonconvento (Pieve a Salti) and a second part from Pieve a Salti to Monte Oliveto Maggiore.
The village of Pieve a Salti lies along provincial road 17, near its confluence with the Traversa dei Monti.
From Pieve a Santi in the Val d'Arbia, this scenic walk leads to the treasure of Crete Senesi: the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto, whose isolation is a visual metaphor for the solitude that inspires the monks and them to retreat from worldly pleasures.
