Podere Santa Pia is a large old rambling Tuscan farmhouse, located on a hill among olive groves, Mediterranean macchia, and vineyards in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. A winding scenic road, just outside the village of Castiglioncello Bandini, is leading to this former cloister, hidden in a seduced valley.
The surrounding hills, crossed with dirt roads and secret paths are ideal for hiking.
The trail from the Abbey of Sant’Antimo towards Sant’Angelo in Colle is situated north of Podere Santa Pia. Take a walk on the strada bianche or dirt road to Sant’Angelo in Colle and have lunch at Il Pozzo or Il Leccio, or go to Pino in Sant'Angelo Scalo for delicious everyday fare. You can enjoy some exclusive wine tours and tasting experiences in the valleys below the abbey.
The trail
This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Brunello vineyards in the Val d’Orcia between Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Sant'Angelo in Colle. There is no difficulty in following the track. And a visit to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, one of the highlights of romanesque architecture, is a must.
You are in the midst of some great wineries: Poggio di Sotto, Ciacci Piccolomini (Località Molinello) and Uccelliera Di Cortonesi Andrea (45 Localita' Pod. Uccelliera) are all nearby. Or check out Mastrojanni, owned by the coffee producing Illy family. Tenuta Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, located in the southeast of the municipality of Montalcino, extends in the immediate vicinity of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, a medieval-looking village near the famous Romanesque abbey of S. Antimo. Located between the Poggio d'Arna and the river Orcia that borders its southern borders, it offers a unique panorama bounded by the iconic silhouette of Monte Amiata.
The estate dates back to the 17th century with a palazzo built in 1672 by Fabius de’ Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino and Abbot of Sant’Antimo. It was bought by the Ciacci family in 1877, but the story of the wine doesn’t start until 1985, and the current owners, brother and sister Paolo and Lucia Bianchini, are only second-generation wine producers.
