|
Itinerary in the great scenery of the Val d’Orcia, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 26 km north of Podere Santa Pia. This itinerary starts in Montalcino at the Porta al Cassero, and brings you to Porta Burelli where you leave the city.
This hike takes you to some of the most beautiful valleys of the Val ‘Orcia, dotted with silvery olive orchards, small villages, and vineyards, passing some of finest wineries on the northern slopes of Montalcino.
There is no difficulty in following the track. It is a magical moment when halfway you reach the famous cypress trees that grace so many postcards.
Montalcino
Within the old walls of Montalcino, there are still six gates visible. This itinerary starts at the Fortezza, and the Porta al Cassero, takes you for a brief walk through the city, along the Piazza del Popolo, the main square of Montalcino, and leads you along the Via Giuseppe Mazzini. Turn right at Via Lapini and leave town through the Porta Burelli.

Montalcino is known for some of the most spectacular wines found in Italy, Brunello di Montalcino. From Porta Burelli you follow the Strada Comunale del Canalicchio, passing by La Gerla, Paradisone Colle degli Angeli, Canalicchio di Sopra, Lazzeretti, Casanova di Neri, Casello, Fattoria Pian dell'Asso, and the Chiesa Madonna del Riguardo, San Quirico.
Just after crossing the torrent Asso, continue on the strada del Riguardo on your right. On your left, you can admire a bunch of cypress trees. If you prefer a short detour to see the most famous cypress trees in Tuscany, follow the dirt road towards Podere Casaltina, and after circa 500 meters, beyond the farmhouse, you will first see the Circle of cypress trees and further on your left the iconic image of the Val d’Orcia.
San Quirico d'Orcia
Arriving at San Quirico d'Orcia, a visit to the picturesque medieval village is a must. The highlights of the town are two Romanesque churches, the honey-colored Collegiata, famous for its three beautifully carved portals, and the smaller Chiesetta di Santa Maria Assunta, also known as Santa Maria or Santa Maria ad Hortos as it is surrounded by gardens, the Horti Leonini and the Giardino delle Rose.
This itinerary ends at the Piazza Garibaldi were the Chiesa San Francesco and the entrance of the Horti Leonini gardens invite you for further exploration of this beautiful gem.
San Quirico host a handful of good restaurants. La Bottega di Portanuova is a tiny uncrowded grocery store and a terrific place to pick up picnic food. They prepare hand-made sandwiches, platters of cold cuts and cheese, and serve some good local wines. There is a lovely outdoor seating area.

Canalicchio di Sopra
In 1967, Canalicchio di Sopra was one of the twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.
Primo Pacenti founded the winery in 1962. The first bottle of Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino was produced in 1966. His son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli started working at his side in 1987, and since 2001, grandchildren Francesco, Marco, and Simonetta have continued family's engagement. The vineyards extend over 19ha of land within the Canalicchio and Montosoli Cru: different terrain, different exposure, different microclimates making each vineyard unique.
