Montalcino, situated 25 km north of Podere Santa Pia, is a particularly well-preserved medieval town in the heart of one of the most important wine regions of Italy. The most beautiful church of Montalcino is located south of the city, in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The Abbey of Sant'Antimo is known to be one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in Italy.
But also some beautiful buildings can be seen within the city walls. Near the fortezza is the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino in which the Museo Civico e arte sacrale is housed. At the highest point of the city stands the Duomo, the Concattedrale di San Salvatore, and on the northern side of the city, we find the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso.

Visit Montalcino preferably outside the high season, and if possible in the early hours.
Parking is easy on Via Pietra Strozzi (Parcheggio Viale Strozzi). At the end of Via Pietra Strozzi is the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso. Behind the church, there is a small square with a marvelous view over the Val d'Orcia in the direction of Siena.

The Madonna or Santa Maria del Soccorso is a Roman Catholic Co-cathedral church or Sanctuary located at Via Spagni in Montalcino. The church was erected across the centuries and thus erected in multiple styles, including a renaissance layout, baroque interiors, and a neoclassical facade.

History

The church was initially built at the site of a chapel set against the walls of the town, with a frescoed Madonna and Child. A church build around this icon was consecrated in 1330. In 1553, it gained the title of Santa Maria del Soccorso after a repulse of besieging landsknechts of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.

Among the interior artworks is a Crucifixion by Francesco Vanni[2] and a Virgin surrounded by Angelic musicians with Saints Sebastian and Roch (circa 1527) by Vicenzo da San Gimignano. This latter painting was originally found in the Oratory of St Roch in the town.[3]

The bell-tower was added in 1625, and the facade was not completed til the early 19th-century. In 1913, the Madonna del Soccorso was named patron of the Diocese and city, and a festival is held in her honor on May 8, with a special celebration every 25 years.[4]

Montalcino

Even more than because of its historical heritage, Montalcino is known for its famous Brunello di Montalcino wines. That makes Montalcino a busy town. But in the early hours, when the locals prepare everything for the incoming crowds, it is pleasant to stay there. Enjoy a caffè on one of the terraces on the main square, Piazza del Popolo, and join the locals in the early hours of a working day.
