Piazzale Michelangelo | Magnificent View on Ponte Vecchio

To get a great overview of the city, you have plenty of choices, but the best way is to head for Piazzale Michelangelo on the hillside just south of the center of town. Go there by bus and walk down, or climb the stairs and paths from the Piazza Giuseppe Poggi.
Some of the most uniquely Florentine shops and sights can be found in the Oltrarno, which is Florence's left bank and home to countless generations of artisans. This section of town can be found by crossing Ponte Vecchio or Ponte Trinità from the center. This 'undiscovered' Florence is a must-see.
There is a nice walk uphill through the San Niccolò neighborhood. The tour starts at the southern end of the Ponte Vecchio, one of the eternal symbols of Florence. Notice the famous Corridoio Vasariano that crosses the bridge.

The Vasari Corridor

The Vasari Corridor is an elevated enclosed passageway which connects the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. Beginning on the south side of the Palazzo Vecchio, it then joins the Uffizi Gallery and leaves on its south side, crossing the Lungarno dei Archibusieri and then following the north bank of the River Arno until it crosses the river at Ponte Vecchio. The Vasari Corridor was built in five months by order of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici in 1565, to the design of Giorgio Vasari. It was commissioned in connection with the marriage of Cosimo's son, Francesco, with Johanna of Austria. The idea of an enclosed passageway was motivated by the Grand Duke's desire to move freely between his residence and the government palace, when, like most monarchs of the period, he felt insecure in public[4].

In the middle of Ponte Vecchio, the corridor is characterized by a series of panoramic windows facing the Arno, in the direction of the Ponte Santa Trinita. These replaced the smaller windows of the original construction in 1939, by order of Benito Mussolini. The larger windows were installed for an official visit to Florence by Adolf Hitler to give him a panoramic view of the river [4].

The corridor covers up part of the façade of the Church of Santa Felicita. The corridor then snakes its way over rows of houses in the Oltrarno district, becoming narrower, to finally join the Palazzo Pitti.
Santa Felicita, on the Oltrarno, or south side of the Ponte Vecchio, contains frescoes of the Annunciation and a painting of the Deposition of Christ by the brilliant and weird mannerist painter, Pontormo. They are to be found in the Capponi-Barbadori Chapel, which is to your immediate right when entering the church [3].

San Niccolò

San Niccolò is one of the most authentic, attractive, beautiful neighborhoods in Oltrarno, between ponte vecchio and Piazzale Michelangelo. The bars and terraces that are mainly visited by the working locals in the morning and at noon, are populated by young people in the evening. In this district you will also find the only city beach of Firenze, la spiaggia sull'Arno, where you can sunbathe in the summer [3].

Walk from Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo

Beautiful walk in one of the most authentic neighborhoods of Firenze, San Nicolò. The atmosphere of an authentic Florentine neighborhood still remains here.

Enjoy the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo. A sunset from this square is a unique experience.

Piazzale Michelangelo is a big square on a hill, but somewhat distant from the traditional tourist sites. It's easy to reach it even on foot using the stairs called Rampe di San Niccolò. They are on the side of the Arno river just in front of the San Niccolò tower, on Piazza Giuseppe Poggi. Do this thing during the summer and during the night to admire Florence's lights.

Camping Michelangelo has a scenic location on the hillside close to Piazza Michelangelo. Usually it is very crowded. It has "house tents" available, which are tents for two people with bunk beds inside.
