Walking from Sant'Antimo to Sant'Angelo Scalo and Poggio alle Mura

Podere Santa Pia is a large old rambling Tuscan farmhouse, located on a hill among olive groves, Mediterranean macchia, and vineyards in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. A winding scenic road, just outside the village of Castiglioncello Bandini, is leading to this former cloister, hidden in a seduced valley.
The surrounding hills, crossed with dirt roads and secret paths are ideal for hiking.

The trail from the Abbey of Sant’Antimo towards Sant’Angelo Scalo and Castello Banfi or Poggio alle Mura is situated north of Podere Santa Pia. Take a walk on the strada bianche or dirt roads towards the vineyards immediately surrounding the medieval Castello Banfi, historically known as Poggio alle Mura (the walled hilltop).
Just before reaching this magical castle, you could have lunch at da Pino in Sant'Angelo Scalo for delicious everyday fare.
The Romanesque Abbey of Sant'Antimo is the absolute highlight of this itinerary.

The trail

This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Brunello vineyards in the Val d’Orcia between Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Sant'Angelo Scalo. There is no difficulty in following the track. The Abbey of Sant'Antimo, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 26 km north of Podere Santa Pia, and 10 km south of Montalcino, dates from the 12th century and is the absolute highlight of this itinerary. This is where our trail starts.

Start
From the idyllic valley of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a former Benedictine monastery, and one of the highlights of Romanesque architecture in Italy, you walk along dirt roads, through vineyards and woodlands to the small village of Sant’Angelo Scalo, and further on to Poggio alle Mura and Castello Banfi. You are in the midst of some great wineries : Poggio di Sotto, Ciacci Piccolomini and Uccelliera Di Cortonesi Andrea are waiting for your visit in the surroundings of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, and Ciacci Piccolomini D'Aragona, la Cantina Mastrojanni, Sesta di Sopra and Collemattoni further along the road. In Sant’Angelo Scalo Caffè Sant'Angelo is the perfect stop for a brief lunch or extended meal. This is one of the best and most authentic restaurants in the region. From Caffè Sant'Angelo you walk on asphalt roads towards Banfi Castle and Poggio alle Mura, to enjoy the beautiful view of the Banfi vineyards, the Orcia river, and Monte Amiata.
