Podere Santa Pia is a large old rambling Tuscan farmhouse, located on a hill among olive groves, Mediterranean macchia, and vineyards in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.
The surrounding hills, crossed with dirt roads and secret paths are ideal for hiking. The famous trail Montalcino - Abbey of Sant'Antimo is situated north of Podere Santa Pia. A short drive will bring you to the attractive hilltop town of Montalcino.

Brunello Crossing

The Brunello Crossing is a trail running event including three races: 44 km, 23 km and 13 km. The Brunello Crossing starts from the Fortress of Montalcino, a fourteenth-century castle built in the highest part of the homonymous medieval village, and runs through woods, Brunello vineyards, olive groves, farms and ancient villages, all in the fascinating natural environment of the Val d'Orcia, part of the Unesco heritage since 2004.
There is also a non-competitive 13 km walk, a guided tour of the cellars and numerous opportunities to taste and appreciate the high quality of local food products, to emphasize the excellent combination of sport, territory, food and wine...

The 2017 and 2018 editions both sold out two weeks before the race, so don't wait too long to subscribe.

Start

This itinerary starts at the Fortezza in Montalcino, or at one of the former gates, the Porta al Cassero.
The fortress of Montalcino was once Siena's last stronghold, now you can take a walk on the walls, or taste some Brunello wines in the enoteca inside the fortress.

You can visit this beautiful small town before or after your walk, or
enjoy exclusive wine tours and tasting experiences in the valleys below.
You walk along dirt roads, through vineyards and woodlands to the simple beauty of the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, stopping off along the route to visit this very impressive Romanesque Abbey.

You are in the midst of some great wineries: Poggio di Sotto, Ciacci Piccolomini (Località Molinello) and Uccelliera Di Cortonesi Andrea (45 Localita' Pod. Uccelliera) are all nearby. Or check out Mastrojanni, owned by the coffee producing Illy family. Plan in advance to arrange a visit to one of these great Brunello wineries in the surroundings of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. A map with some of the most particular wineries on the southern slopes of Montalcino can be found here.

You walk through some of the most famous vineyards in the world, and wine estates Podere Poggiolo, Ventolaio, Uccelliera, Podere Cocco, Podere L'Aiole, Fattoria dei Barbi, La Croce and Villa Greppo.
