Crete senesi | Percorso di trekking Anello Trequanda – Petroio – Montisi – Montelifré

Podere Santa Pia is a beautiful stone farmhouse only 2 km away from Castiglioncello Bandini. The main house is spacious, comfortable and well furnished and offers its guests a breathtaking view over the Maremma hills. As one drives down to the property you can’t help feeling a sense of anticipation: turning into a gloriously open space surrounded by trees and ultimately this almost perfect holiday home, it is difficult not to be overwhelmed by the setting and the stunning, far reaching views.

Anello Trequanda – Petroio – Montisi – Montelifré

This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Siena and the Crete Senesi, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 70 km north of Podere Santa Pia. This itinerary starts and ends in Trequanda.
Park your car on Via dei Giardini Pubblici, next to the Parco Ornella Pancirolli, or on Via Cacciaconti, just outside the walls of Trequanda.

The Crete Senesi, the Badlands of Tuscany

The Crete Senesi consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.
The magnificent hills of the Crete Senesi offer endless views with evocative and suggestive landscapes. Typical conformations of the land are the badlands, the calanchi and biancane that give the landscape its characteristic gray color and a sometimes lunar appearance.1

This evocative itinerary covers all the highlights of the Crete in the Municipality of Trequanda and offers spectacular views of the clay hills with colors and light changing from hour to hour, and from season to season.
The itinerary start in Trequanda, on the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, in front of the beautiful chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Andrea. Behind the church is the Parco Ornella Pancirolli, a nice square for concerts and other events.
Or start your hike at the Parking on Via Cacciaconti.

Breathtaking views, a few superb restaurants, and beautiful buildings, Trequanda has a lot to offer. The Church di S.S. Pietro and Andrea has a fourteenth-century façade covered with remarquable white and ochre color travertine stones, forming a geometrical chessboard pattern.

Enjoy a croissant and coffee in the morning, and watch the locals pass by in Osteria Cafe Ciriera (Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi 23, in front of the church), before taking off.

Going back along the asphalt road, take the small dirt road on the right that leads you in a light and constant ascent towards "Casanuova alla Stazione" and then on the ridge that leads us to overcome on our right the brick furnace and the adjacent quarry. Continuing on the ridge we arrive at Mucigliani where an exceptional panoramic view opens up on the Crete Senesi, and the Biancane di Leonina.

Accona Desert

The Accona Desert or Deserto di Accona is a semi-arid area in the center of the Crete senesi. This particular landscape is characterized by calanques and dome-shaped formations locally known as biancane (deriving from Italian bianco, white, due to their light shade).
