Podere Santa Pia is a beautiful stone farmhouse only 2 km away from Castiglioncello Bandini. This former small cloister combines contemporary charm and vintage flavor and offers its guests a breathtaking view over the Maremma hills. As one drives down to the property you can’t help feeling a sense of anticipation: turning into a gloriously open space surrounded by trees and ultimately this almost perfect holiday home, it is difficult not to be overwhelmed by the setting and the stunning, far reaching views.
Podere Santa Pia is surrounded by a backdrop of hills and Mediterranean macchia: wild, untamed and completely natural vegetation, wonderful for walking and exploring.
We selected the best walking trails in southern Tuscany, hikes of varying lengths and difficulties. On this page, we focus on the Crete Senesi and Asciano. Explore the winding cypress roads and architectural wonders around Montalcino, Trequanda, Montisi, and Asciano, and immerse yourself in the rhythms of la dolce vita on an unforgettable journey through the Crete Senesi. A visit to the stunning abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is a must.
Here you can have a good impression of the badlands of the Crete Senesi. The Accona Desert is an arid area in the surroundings of Chiusure and the Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey.
In summer months, the Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi music Festival organises authentic concerts in Asciano, Castelmuzio and Sant'Anna in Camprena.
Anello Asciano
This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Asciano and the Crete Senesi, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 70 km north of Podere Santa Pia. This itinerary starts and ends in Asciano.
Park your car on Via del Fiume, behind the Sant'Agata church.
The Crete Senesi, the Badlands of Tuscany
The Crete Senesi consists of a range of hills and woods among villages and includes the comuni of Asciano, Buonconvento, Monteroni d'Arbia, Rapolano Terme and San Giovanni d'Asso, all within the province of Siena.
The magnificent hills of the Crete Senesi offer endless views with evocative and suggestive landscapes. Typical conformations of the land are the badlands, the calanchi and biancane that give the landscape its characteristic gray color and a sometimes lunar appearance.

This evocative itinerary offers spectacular views of the clay hills with colors and light changing from hour to hour, and from season to season.
The itinerary starts in Asciano, on the Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, in front of the beautiful church of Sant'Agata.
We cross Ascciano, following the
Corso Giacomo Matteotti or the Via Goffredo Mameli, that leads us to the Piazza Garibaldi. Further on your right, in Via Fiume is Museo Amos Cassioli, displaying some portraits by Cassioli, who lived here from 1832 to 1891, and other modern works by local artists. Of more interest is the Casa del Mosaico Romano in Via del Canto.
At the Corso Giacomo Matteotti, 108 we find the Ex Convento Agostiniano and in the adjacent Vicolo San Agostino, we can visit the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino. Undiscussed highlight of this exploration of Asciano is the Corboli Palace, housing the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Sacred Art (Corso Giacomo Matteotti, 122).
We leave Asciano through the
Vicolo San Agostino, hidden between Palazzo Corboli and the Sant'Agostino Church. We walk down, until we reach the Chiesa della Madonna del Giardino a Camparboli where we turn right.

The Asciano-Monte Antico railway is always nearby as we pass Podere Gano and halfway our trail Podere Poggio Greppoli. This is an old railway line closed to traffic more than 20 years ago and recently reopened as a tourist railway, the Nature Train. At a certain point we have an exellent view over the viaduct near Asciano.
Before returning to Asciano we walk around Poggio del Leccio (WP 7, 262 m) and the pieve di Sant'Ippolito ad Asciano, a private property.
