Biancane in the Crete Senesi

This is an itinerary in the great scenery of Siena and the Crete Senesi, in a picture-perfect setting, just about 70 km north of Podere Santa Pia.
The magnificent hills of the Crete Senesi offer endless views with evocative and suggestive landscapes. Typical conformations of the land are the badlands, the calanchi and biancane that give the landscape its characteristic gray color and a sometimes lunar appearance.
The strada delle Biancane or Biancane road starts from Leonina and reaches Podere Fiorentine. It is called this way because it crosses the so-called mammelloni, or mamelons, small rounded hills of clay which in the summer become a dazzling white color under the sun.

This evocative itinerary covers several highlights of the Crete in the Municipality of Asciano and offers spectacular views of the clay hills with colors and light changing from hour to hour, and from season to season.

How to reach Castello Leonina, the start of this itinerary

From Siena you reach Arbia where you take the Lauretana state road towards Asciano. Just beyond the bridge over the Biena, the junction for Leonina is on the left.
Upon entering the dirt road, park the car in the clearing on the right and walk along the dirt road lined with cypresses towards Leonina castle.

Il Site Transitoire si trova tra le Località di Leonina e Mucigliani. Nel 1993 l’artista francese Jean-Paul Philippe realizzò questa scultura in pietra, composta da differenti componenti: una seduta che accoglie il viandante, il quale può scegliere liberamente se stare seduto, alzato o sdraiato e una grande finestra all’interno della quale, la luce solare si concentra durante il tramonto in occasione del solstizio d’estate [5] . Jean Paul Philippe: «Compiendo quel gesto, installando quelle pietre, mi resi conto che disegnavano nella luce e nello spazio i limiti di una casa: una dimora senza mura e dalla soglia invisibile. A terra alcune lastre, una sedia per accogliere il passante, un banco, una finestra e per tetto la volta celeste».
