Pienza, Via Gozzante, walk towards the Pieve di Corsignano

The Val d'Orcia is like a precious treasure: the ancient roads of Val d'Orcia, the Via Francigena, the Via Cassia and many others, offer a great variety of itineraries.
Make a walk from Pienza to the Capella di Vitaleta. It is a beautiful way to immerse yourselve in the breathtaking rolling hills and empty fields of the Val d'Orcia. The strade bianche or graveln roads of the Val d'Orcia offer a great variety of itineraries. Lanes with cypress trees, pathways, and the continuously changing landscapes invite the visitor to move slowly and enjoy views and monuments. First, we enjoy a pleasant walk through the historic center of Pienza, to admire the impressive architecture, shops, and restaurants.
Normally Pienza is very peaceful and it’s possible to walk the perimeter of the town in less than an hour. Avoid weekends, when the historical center might be overcrowded.
Walk to the side of town to admire the views, too. The panoramic walkwayVia Santa Caterin and the alleys next to and behind the Duomo, offer the best views on the Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata.

If you descend Via Gozzante, on the right of the Duomo, you walk under the hanging gardens of Palazzo Piccollomini to the Pieve di Corsignano. On this walk you can fully enjoy the gently rolling hills, with here and there a cypress or an abandoned farm. You can also follow the signs for Pieve di Corsignano on the Porta Romana and descend along Via Santa Caterina, which later turns to the left in Via delle Fonti. Near the Pieve a nice walk in the overwhelming landscape of the Val d'Orcia leads us from Pienza to the Villa Poggio Manzuoli, the place where Ridley Scott turned the final scenes of Gladiator, an epic film starring Russell Crowe and Connie Nielsen. In the first part of this trail we walk along another very recognizable film location of Gladiator, Podere Terrapille and the famous cypresses along the winding, scenic road and fields where Russell Crowe stumbled home through the wheat fields. Strolling through the historical center, do not leave without a glass of wine or an aperitif in Paolo's bar Il Casello on Via Il Casello (the street on the left of the Duomo). Here the four famous alleys of Pienza, via dell'Amore, via del Bacio, via del Bula and via della Fortuna come together. A great place, visited by locals and young lovers, and with an uninterrupted view of the Val d'Orcia and the silhouette of Monte Amiata.
