City walk | Discover Pienza | Walk in the beautiful setting of the Val d'Orcia and Pienza

The ancient roads of the Val d'Orcia, the strade bianche, offer a great variety of itineraries. Lanes with cypress trees, pathways, and the continuously changing landscapes invite the visitor to move slowly and enjoy views and monuments. First, we enjoy a pleasant walk through the historic center of Pienza, to admire the impressive architecture, shops, and restaurants. Many of the houses on the small side streets have beautiful flowers in front of them, giving the town a pleasant atmosphere.
Normally Pienza is very peaceful and it’s possible to walk the perimeter of the town in less than an hour. Avoid weekends, when the historical center might be overcrowded.
Walk to the side of town to admire the views, too. Along the trail, the alleys behind the Duomo, and the panoramic walkwayViale Santa Caterina offer the best views on the Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata.

Pienza, the ideal city of Enzo Piccolomini
Pienza was built in the village of Corsignano, the birthplace of Enea Silvio Piccolomini. This pope had the ambition to transform his birth village Corsignano into a model city of the Renaissance.
He, therefore, appealed to the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of his mentor Leon Battista Alberti. The new vision of urban spatial planning is especially readable in the beautiful Piazza Pio II, and the buildings surrounding it: the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia palace and the cathedral with its pure Renaissance exterior. [2] Some cardinals also settled in Pienza and had a palace built there. The Palazzo Gonzaga Simonelli, Palazzo Pincelli and Palazzo Massaini testify to that.
Enea Piccolomini's plans came to an early end because of his early death in 1464. Bernardo Rossellino died a short time later.
3,5 km, the walk takes less than an hour.

We start this walk with a brief exploration of the alleys of Pienza, starting with Largo Roma, and entering Pienza along the Via dell'Apertura.
Walk into Via dell'Apertura and almost immediately turn left onto Via Case Nuove to enter a pleasant square. There is a good ice cream parlor, Buon Gusto Gelateria (Via delle Case Nuove, 26), and at number 7 Caffè della Volpe. The ideal place for a first coffee.
The Via Case Nuove takes you to the central street of Pienza, the Corso il Rossellino. And the Corso leads to the trapezoidal main square Piazza Pio II, a grand and elegant square, surrounded by the town hall, with its bell tower, the Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Borgia and the Duomo.
Start
From the Porta al Prato follow the indications for the Pieve di Corsignano on the Piazza Dante Alighieri, the Viale Santa Catarina which branches a little further to the Via del Fonte. The Ristorante Terrazza Val d'Orcia has a nice terrace. A walk of 11 minutes will take you to the Pieve di Corsignano. This small church with its striking round bell tower and two beautiful pertals, is a highlight of Romanesque architecture.
Past the Pieve di Corsignano the road turns into a dirt road that leads to the Capella Vitaleta and on to Bagno Vignoni. But we follow the path upwards, left of the fountain. This path runs through olive groves and continues up along a forest edge and leads to the Via Santa Caterina, where we turn right and return to Pienza.
And finally, strolling again through the historical center, do not leave without a glass of wine or an aperitif in Paolo's bar Il Casello'on Via Il Casello (the street on the left of the Duomo). Here the four famous alleys of Pienza, via dell'Amore, via del Bacio, via del Bula and via della Fortuna come together. A great place, visited by locals and young lovers, and with an uninterrupted view of the Val d'Orcia and the silhouette of Monte Amiata.
When you return to the parking lot, you walk back to the Largo Roma, where the Consorzio Agrario di Siena could be a last stop for shopping. Here you will find a nice and affordable selection of regional products. Not only pecorino cheese, but also meats, truffles, mushrooms, olive oil, wine and so on.
