One of the most beautiful walks in Firenze runs from the Ponte Vecchio through one of the most authentic areas of Firenze, San Niccolò, to the Piazzale Michelangelo. This square offers a magical view of Firenze, we recognize the Ponte Vecchio, the Santa Maria del Fiore, Uffizi, Santa Croce and the Palazzo Vecchio. Only a few steps from Piazzale Michelangelo, hidden between several cypresses, you’ll find one of the most beautiful churches in Florence, the San Miniato al Monte. This is a romantic walk, so we also visit the beautiful Cimitero delle Porte Sante, the cemetry of the Holy Doors, which is behind the Romanesque church.
Sacred Doors Cemetery (Cimitero delle Porte Sante)
Cimitero delle Porte Sante (The Sacred Doors Cemetery) is a monumental cemetery in Florence located within the fortified bastion of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte.
The idea of a burial site near San Miniato was conceived around 1837, although the camposanto was inaugurated eleven years later, in 1848.
The project, originally entrusted to architect Niccolò Matas (the designer of the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce), was enlarged and in 1864 Mariano Falcini used the area of the sixteenth-century fortress lying around the church.

The project of the new cemetery grew parallel with the development of the new road network, elaborated by Poggi, which, with the opening of the Viale dei Colli (the Colli Boulevard) and the monumental staircase, created new ways to access the basilica [3].

Carlo Collodi, creator of Pinocchio, politician Giovanni Spadolini, painter Pietro Annigoni, poet and author Luigi Ugolini, film producer Mario Cecchi Gori, sculptor Libero Andreotti, writer Giovanni Papini, and physicist Bruno Benedetto Rossi are buried there.
Pellegrino Artusi, writer, but best known as the author of the cookbook La scienza in cucina e l'arte di mangiar bene ("Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well") is buried in the Porte Sante cemetery.

You can reach Piazzale Michelangelo by bus 12 of 13. The bus stop is across the parking lot at Piazzale.
Bus 12 takes you back to the SMN station via the western part of the city center (Ponte alle Grazie, Santa Croce, etc. to Santa Maria Novella). Bus 13 takes you back to the SMN station via the Oltrarno / Boboli Gardens district.
The best way to reach the square is on foot. A unique walk leaves from Ponte Vecchio. This is a romantic walk, which you can take preferably at nightfall. A sunset from this square is a unique experience.

A short walk across the Arno river, through one of the most original areas of Firenze, San Niccolò. The atmosphere of an authentic Florentine neighborhood still remains here. The many bars and terraces are mainly visited during the day by the working florentines, in the evening young people enter the street life.
In this district you will also find the only city beach of Firenze, the spiaggia sull'Arno, where you can sunbathe from June until September.
On top, Piazzale Michelangelo offers the most beautiful view of Florence, with views of the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi, Santa Croce and the Palazzo Vecchio. The whole old city center is at your feet here.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is also worth a visit at nightfall. The lights of the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio and the buildings surrounding it, make for a magical nighttime scene. So, walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo to watch the sunset!

The monumental cemetery in front and back of San Miniato al Monte contains the tombs of illustrious men. On the Cimitero delle Porte Sante we find the graves of important artists such as Libero Andreotti, Pietro Annigoni and Ottone Rosai, writers such as Vasco Pratolini and illustrious Florentines such as Pellegrino Artusi., Giovanni Spadolini and the film producer Mario Cecchi Gori.

[3] Viale dei Colli is an approximately 6 km long panoramic road in Firenze. It stretches from the Porta Romana to the Ponte San Niccolò and was designed and realized by Giuseppe Poggi in the short period that Florence was the capital of Italy (1865-1871). The architect meticulously described them in the seventh chapter of his report on the extension of Florence. He deliberately designed 'picturesque' effects, right down to the promenade to the church of San Miniato al Monte and the Cimitero delle Porte Sante cemetery. The Piazzale Michelangelo has been conceived as the highlight of the Viale dei Colli.
The width of the avenues was between 16 and 18 meters, and a planted 2-meter wide zone was located between the pavement and the avenue. Along the walking route, which has a slope between 1 and 3.8%, Poggi provided some gardens with arbors and chalets that at the time offered "all kinds of recreation".
Poggi also built a loggia against the hill, a building to house the casts of Michelangelo's sculptures used on the Piazzale Michelangelo. The building was not realized as such and is now a good restaurant, la Loggia del Piazzale Michelangelo.
