To get a great overview of the city, you have plenty of choices: climb the dome of the Cathedral or Giotto's Bell Tower which is much easier or head for Piazzale Michelangelo on the hillside just south of the center of town. Go there by bus or climb the stairs and paths from the Lungarno della Zecca. There is a nice walk uphill through the San Niccolò neighborhood, starting at Ponte Vecchio.

Santa Maria del Carmine

Santa Maria del Carmine has famous frescoes (Masaccio’s Adam and Eve Banished From the Garden and others by Lippi and Masolino) in the Brancacci Chapel.

The Basilica di Santo Spirito, usually referred to simply as Santo Spirito, is located in the Oltrarno quarter, facing the square with the same name. Piazza Santo Spirito is one of the most overlooked piazzas on the Florence Map. Santo Spirito is an excellent place to relax, chat, or drink a bottle of wine. Separated from the hustle and bustle of tourism in Florence, Santo Spirito gives you a taste of Italy and gives you a chance to engage with the locals.

A few steps away from the facade of the Santo Spirito Church you may visit one of the antic hidden gems of Florence: the Cenacolo of Santo Spirito in the former refectory of Santo Spirito, housing the Fondazione Salvatore Romano with Orcagna's masterpiece.

From Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo and back

The bars and terraces that are mainly visited by the working locals in the morning and at noon, are populated by young people in the evening. In this district you will also find the only city beach of Firenze, la spiaggia sull'Arno, where you can sunbathe in the summer. On top of the Piazzale Michelangelo you can enjoy the most beautiful panorama of the city, with views of the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi, Santa Croce and the Palazzo Vecchio.
