The Maremma coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Tuscany.
Castiglione della Pescaia, in southern Tuscany, is the answer to a perfect day on the beach.
The tranquil seaside village is only on hour drive away from Podere Santa Pia and a perfect destination for a day trip.

Castiglione della Pescaia has become a centre of international tourism and in 2014 it ranked 4th among the most visited destinations in Tuscany,[1] with approximately 1.3 million tourist arrivals, only preceded by Florence, Pisa and Montecatini Terme. It is interesting to notice how Castiglione is not only the first seaside destination in Maremma, but it is also the first in Tuscany. Strangely, although Castiglione is extremely popular among German, Dutch, Russian and French tourists, it is not particularly known by the British, so much that the British online newspaper The Telegraph described Castiglione's annexed fraction, Punta Ala, as a corner of Tuscany the British haven't found.[2] Due to its popularity, but also its cleanliness and high environmental standards, Castiglione is often referred to as the Switzerland of Maremma, diversifying itself from other seaside towns by a refusal to turn itself into an industrialised commercial destination, prioritising the nature and its wildness.

Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia is an important seaside resort set along the coast of the Tuscan Maremma, where important works for the reclamation of the territory were realised under the Florentine domination.
The village was founded by the Romans, with the name of Salebrum; in a IX century document it is mentioned as "Castellione della Piscaria". Then it was conquered by Pisa and, in the second half of the XVI century, passed under the control of the Medici family.
The historic town centre is set on a promontory, characterised by a medieval castle built in the X century by the Pisans as a lookout tower. Many other fortifications are still visible on the territory, such as the Cassero Senese in Vetulonia, the Aldobrandeschi castle in Buriano, Lilli Tower, Cala Galera Tower, Punta Ala Castle and the Appiani Tower.
The archaeological sites in Vetulonia, the remains of a Roman villa near the Bruna river, the Tombolo pinewood and the Daccia Botrona Natural Reserve - in an area originally occupied by the Prile lake - are interesting too.
The Pieve church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the XVI century using a weapons warehouse and realising the bell tower in neogothic style with a tower of the city walls.
Among the other churches, we mention the medieval Pieve church of Santa Maria Assunta in Buriano, the baroque church of Sant'Andrea and the Church of Santa Maria del Giglio.[3]

The Nature reserve Diaccia Botrona, known as the most important wetland in Italy, offers a great walking excursion, the sentiero n° 31 o RET 010 which starts at the Casa Rossa Ximenes. North of Castiglione della Pescaia, several itineraries explore the past, heading up to Tirli from the Ampio Valley to the Hermitage of Sant'Anna, and another trail towards the ruins of the Hermitage of San Guglielmo a Malavalle, just 6 km outside of Castiglione della Pescaia. The order was named after William of Maleval who lived there around 1155. The small Romanesque chapel dates back to the thirteenth century. The entirely flat course starts from the north of Marina di Grosseto, at La Fiumara, from where it is reachable through the urban roads of the hamlet. The track then heads north-west across the northern part of the Pineta of Tombolo, with parallel development on the same stretch of the State Route 322 in Collacchie (now Provincial Road No. 158).
