For sea lovers, the Maremma is a true natural paradise. The Maremma coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Tuscany. Every year the Maremma sea receives awards for cleaning the waters along the 160km of coastline.

The tranquil seaside village is only on hour drive away from Podere Santa Pia and a perfect destination for a day trip. The coast and the sea of Castiglione della Pescaia have earned 5 sails from the Legambiente-Italian Touring Club, and since 2000, Castiglione della Pescaia has always been awarded the "European Blue Flag” (Bandiera Blu Europea) award of FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) for its beaches and touristic harbors (Marina di Punta Ala).

Castiglione della Pescaia is located in the South-Western portion of Tuscany, with a gorgeous view of the islands of Elba and Giglio, and of the promontory of Argentario. The hills that back the city slope into beautiful beaches that front the town in its entirety. The modern city grew around a medieval fortress and a large fishery, from which it acquired its designation. Today Castiglione is known mostly for its beaches, a vibrant nightlife, its nature, but also its majestic fortress and the uncontaminated natural reserve Diaccia Botrona, a swampy humid environment hosting unique wildlife, e.g. flamingoes, mallards, and ducks. These efforts were rewarded as Castiglione, as mentioned above, is the most popular seaside town in Tuscany. Castiglione's crystalline sea has been repeatedly nominated as Italy's best sea by the national non-governmental environmentalist organization Legambiente. This happened to be the case in the most recent edition of the awards too, in 2015.[3] |

Main sightsOne of the most popular tourist destinations in the area is the famous historical Etruscan center of Vetulonia, which hosts an Etruscan museum with an adjacent well preserved archaeological site, encompassing ancient remains of the old inhabitants of Maremma. Furthermore, the hamlets of Punta Ala, Riva del Sole, Roccamare and Rocchette are beach resorts catering mostly tourists from Central and Northern Europe. In the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia, the 1,000-hectare (2,500-acre) Natural Reserve of Diaccia Botrona (with 18th-century Casa Rossa Ximenes) is a designated wetland area of international interest, according to the Ramsar Convention.

The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve and Casa Rossa XimenesThe Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve represents the last part of the marshes of Castiglione della Pescaia and covers an area of 3145 acres. The Diaccia Botrona Reserve is among the most important areas of Tuscany for wintering and migration of many species of waterfowl, waders, the elegant pink flamingos, and nesting of herons and the Marsh Harrier. The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve and the whole town of Castiglione are places of excellence, dedicated to biodiversity and sustainable tourism; a fine combination of nature, history, and culture. The Multimedia Museum Visitor Center has been created in the beautiful Casa Rossa Ximenes (iconic structure of Maremma’s Reclamation) designed in 1765 by the environmental engineer Leonardo Ximenes by the will of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena.
