Sovana, like Pitigliano, is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Sovana, with its picturesque streets and squares, its palace and the imposing medieval square, the Piazza del Pretorio, is worth a visit.
The Duomo, one of the most important Romanesque churches in southern Tuscany, and the Museum Mamiliano, where you can admire an ancient treasure and an intriguing collection of Etruscan terracotta statues, are highly recommended.
Next to the museum, in front of Palazzo Preorio is Palazzo Bourbon del Monte.
Palazzo Bourbon del Monte
Probably built in the late sixteenth century (and probably completed around the middle of the 17th century) over an existing public local, the building has an austere structure and is characterized by the fine entrance hall with vaulted ceilings, preceded by large arches and from which the 15yth century portal leads to the garden.
A staircase leads to the large noble hall, where the special molded windows look out on one side to the square of Sovana and the other towards the surrounding countryside.
It became the property of the Marquis Bourbon del Monte (hence the name) when in 1650 he obtained the grant of the fief of San Martino, detached from Sovana. Subsequently, it was the seat of government offices and also the local school. Its large spaces were divided up and remodeled several times resulting in a partial collapse in the 1960s.
Later the building was purchased by Prof. Luciano Ventura and, in 1968 a careful restoration was begun which lasted more than fifteen years, returning the building to its former splendor of the Renaissance. The building is private property and not accessible to the public.
Sovana in Arte
Since 2009, in the month of August, the Palazzo Bourbon del Monte offers the Cultural Association "I Sogni in Teatro", the garden and the main hall for the festival Sovana in Arte, featuring theater, music and film.
