Pienza - Monticchiello

Itinerary in the great scenery of the Val d’Orcia. This itinerary starts at the Piazza Pio II in Pienza. Pienza was rebuilt from a village called Corsignano, which was the birthplace of Enea Silvio Piccolomini. You can visit this beautiful small renaissance town before or after your walk. From the piazza you have an overview of Pienza's major monuments.

Walk Pienza -Monticchiello

Beyond the Porta al Prato, the Corso leads to the trapezoidal main square Piazza Pio II, a grand and elegant square, surrounded by the city hall, with its bell tower, the Palazzo Piccolomini, Palazzo Borgia and the Duomo.

Pienza has some wonderful views over the Val d'Orcia below. Instead of following the Corso towards the Porta del Ciglio, we can take the alley left of the Duomo, the Via del Casello. Take a stop at Bar Il Casello (Via del Casello 3), for a first coffee with uninterrupted views of the Val d'Orcia. This is a great spot frequented by locals and young lovers.
We leave Pienza through the Porta al Ciglio and walk down the Strada Comunale Monticchiello, through the undulating landscape of the Val d'Orcia, one of the most suggestive and uncontaminated parts of Tuscany.

We reach The gate of Montcchiello after approximately 1,5 hours. There are several good retaurants in Monticchiello, some of them with a splendid terrace from where you can look back on your hike.
