Arcidosso - Monte Labbro | In the footsteps of the prophet and rebel David Lazzaretti

A nice walk along the slopes of Monte Amiata, from Arcidosso, through the Nature Reserve Parco Faunistico Monta Amiata to the old hermitage of David Lazzaretti on the top of the Monte Labbro.

Arcidosso lies on the western flank of Monte Amiata at an altitude of 640 meters. Above the attractive village is the castle of the Aldobrandeschi (14th century). A walk in the winding alleys to the top of the castle leads you past some small churches and a square with a wonderful view of Monte Amiata, and on to the study center David Lazzaretti. The gateway to the fortress, the Porta del Castello, is adorned with the coat of arms of the Medici, on which impressive spheres adorn.

The itinerary starts at the Porta del Castello, at the foot of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. In just over two hours you walk along the slopes of Monte Amiata to the Monte Labbro, the highest peak in the Riserva Naturale Monte Labbro and the place where David Lazzaretti with his followers retreated, and further downhill to Santa Fiora. But first we make an exploratory walk through this beautiful little town. You can usually park near the two cozy squares of Arcidosso. Enjoy an espresso in Bar Concerto (Piazza Indipendenza) or Bar gelateria il centrale (Corso Toscana, 9) and watch the authentic Tuscan life. Walk up the Corso Toscana until you see the Porta del Castello on your left. This road leads up to the Piazzetta Del Castello and the Parish Church of San Nicolo', further to Piazza Cavallotti, the square that lies at the foot of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. This is the best preserved medieval castle in Tuscany. At the same square we also find the Teatro degli Unanimi, one of the oldest theaters in the region. The theater was founded in 1741. On the other side of the castle is also a small square with the coats of arms of the Aldobrandeschi. Here we also find the entrance to the Centro Studi David Lazzaretti. Through a small gate you descend to Via degli Olmi. Turn left and walk back to the Corso Toscana. On the square behind Bar Il centrale is a bronze bust by Giovan Domenico Peri (1564 - 1639), a versatile poet-dramaturg who grew up in Arcidosso in a peasant family, and became house poet of Cosimo II de 'Medici. David Lazzaretti, the prophet and rebel of Monte Amiata

David Lazzaretti or Davide Lazzaretti (Arcidosso, 6 november 1834 - Bagnore, 18 augustus 1878) was an Italian preacher and rebel. He worked in Tuscany in the Monte Amiata region at the end of the nineteenth century. For his visionary vision and his tragic end he was called the profeta dell’Amiata (prophet of the Amiata). Lazzaretti (1834-1878) dedicated his life to taking care of the lower classes in Amiata after the unification of Italy. He founded his own religion under what was known as Giurisdavidismo, the Giusdavidic Church in 1870, aming for a mystical and utopian socialism. The aversion of the state and the church to his messianism caused his death. Lazzaretti was shot by the Carabinieri on 18 August 1878. The Centro studi David Lazzaretti is housed in the Rocca Aldobrandeschi in Arcidosso. The study center documents the life of this priest-communist avant-la-lettre. The exhibition shows the clothing worn by Lazzaretti and his followers during the procession of August 18, 1878, as well as an in-depth description of his life and work, and banners and other objects related to the life and work of David Lazzaretti.
