Ponte d’Arbia is a small, historic village in Tuscany that serves as an official and strategic resting place on the Via Francigena. The village lies on the River Arbia (in the municipality of Buonconvento) and marks the exact end of stage 34 (coming from Siena) and the start of stage 35 (towards San Quirico d’Orcia). Historically, the site has been known since the 10th century as the 14th stopping place (Submansio XIV) in Archbishop Sigeric’s travel diary.
The routes to and from Ponte d’Arbia

Stage 34: Siena to Ponte d’Arbia (25.8 km): A moderately challenging walk of around 6 hours through the rolling hills of the Crete Senesi. The route consists largely of unpaved country lanes (strade bianche) with no shade. A highlight along the way is the Grancia di Cuna, a magnificent medieval fortified granary.

Stage 35: Ponte d'Arbia to San Quirico d'Orcia (26 km): This stage takes you further south through the spectacular Val d'Orcia, past the nearby medieval walled village of Buonconvento.

Siena - Ponte d'Arbia - Buonconvento | Via Francigena | 26 km - 5 km

Buonconvento - San-Quirico-d'Orcia | Via Francigena | 17 km

This itinerary starts in Buonconvento, near the Ponte d'Arbia, and leads to San Quirico d'Orcia, in the heart of the Val d'Oria.

Facilities for pilgrims in the village

Ponte d’Arbia is very small and peaceful, ideal for resting after a long day’s walk. The best-known and most highly rated accomodation is the Centro Cresti pilgrims’ hostel (a ‘donativo’ hostel, where you pay what you can), renowned for its warm hospitality and free washing machines. There is also the comfortable Affittacamere Martelli.
At the local and cosy A Modo Mio Caffè, you can not only enjoy a special pilgrim’s menu and homemade Pici pasta, but also have your pilgrim’s passport (credenziale) officially stamped. For traditional Tuscan meat dishes and pizza, there’s Ristorante Pizzeria Il Ponte.
