Podere Santa Pia is a large old rambling Tuscan farmhouse, located on a hill among olive groves, Mediterranean macchia, and vineyards in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. The surrounding hills, crossed with dirt roads and secret paths are ideal for hiking. A short drive will bring you to the attractive hilltop town of Montalcino. And a visit to Montalcino, capital of Brunello di Montalcino, is a must for most travelors.
All roads in Montalcino lead to the main square, Piazza del Popolo.
One must visit the Palazzo Pubblico, the old town hall dating back to 1292, with its coat of arms belonging to the old podestà, and the Caffè Fiaschetteria 1888, one of the oldest cafés in Italy.

Caffè Fiaschetteria

These are the addresses of memory. Friendly nicknamed the Florian di Montalcino, created by Ferruccio Biondi Santi, grandson of the inventor of Brunello, for more than a century the Caffè Fiaschetteria has been a wine and cultural meeting place for local producers and a destination for refined people from all over the world. An exquisite example of pure Art Nouveau or Liberty, with counter and display cabinets, sofas in red velvet, mirrors and yellow marble tables, just as it was in the late nineteenth century. Illustrious guests include such international figures as the Canadian Prime Minister Jean, Mario Monicelli, Anthony Hopkins and even Prince Charles of England.

Early in the morning, when locals and regular visitors meet each other on the terrace while enjoying an espresso or cappuccino, Caffè Fiaschetteria is a nice and elegant place. The prices are terribly high.
If you insist on sitting down and relax, Caffè alle Logge di Piazza right opposite of la Fiaschetteria is a good choice.

Brunello di Montalcino owes its existence to the creative genius of Clemente Santi and his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi who in the eighteen hundreds started producing barrel-aged single-varietal wines in Montalcino, betting on the extraordinary quality potential of Sangiovese grosso [3]. Caffè Fiaschetteria was founded by Ferruccio Biondi Santi.

Clemente Santi and  Ferruccio Biondi Santi

One of the first records of "Brunello" was a red wine that was made in the Montalcino area in the early 14th century. In 1831, marchese Cosimo Ridolfi (who was later appointed Prime Minister of Tuscany by the Grand Duke Leopold II) praised the merits of the red wines of Montalcino above all others in Tuscany. In 1865, an agricultural fair in Montalcino noted that the prize winning wine of the event was a "select red wine" known as a Brunello. In the mid-19th century, a local farmer named Clemente Santi isolated certain plantings of Sangiovese vines in order to produce a 100% varietal wine that could be aged for a considerable period of time. In 1888, his grandson Ferruccio Biondi-Santi—a veteran soldier who fought under Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Risorgimento—released the first "modern version" of Brunello di Montalcino that was aged for over a decade in large wood barrels.[2]
