A Madonna del Parto is an iconic depiction of the Virgin Mary shown as pregnant, which was developed in Italy, mainly in Tuscany in the 14th century. The most famous work showing the subject is a fresco painting by Piero della Francesca, finished around 1460. It is housed in the Museo della Madonna del Parto of Monterchi. The Virgin is represented pregnant, in the center of a tent opened by two angels. She wears a simple blue dress with openings that allow a glimpse of the white undergarment, a symbol of her purity.
During the 1911 restoration, Professor Domenico Fiscali added the upper part of the tent with this dome-shaped lunette, in imitation of the repainting of the 1700s. |

As a result of subsequent studies, it then emerged that the added part tended to affect the perspective of the work, which as a result ended up appearing more squashed.
Precisely for this reason, it was removed during the 1992 restoration work, leaving the original fragment unaltered. Afterward, by removing the coating of mold and the colors added in previous restorations, the fresco reacquired its appeal in the full expression of its enigmatic perspective and in the brightness of the colors.[2]

Madonna del Parto, Storia |
Piero painted the Madonna del Parto on the wall opposite the entrance of the chapel of Santa Maria di Momentana, on a smaller fresco dating back to the 14th century, made by an unknown local painter. It showed a Madonna with Child, recently named Madonna del Latte (the Breast-Feeding Madonna), which was discovered in 1911 by the restorer Domenico Fiscali when the Royal Cultural Heritage department ordered the Madonna del Parto to be moved from the wall in order to be restored and preserved.[4]
