Gardens in Siena | L'Orto de'Pecci, a green oasis just below the Piazza del Campo

L’Orto de’Pecci is located in the former psychiatric hospital area in Siena and is a green oasis just below Piazza del Campo, with a fantastic view of the Torre del Mangia. An unpaved road crosses the garden, which a cooperative association has maintained as it always was. To reach this cooperative garden, walk to Piazza del Mercato and take the stairs down to the green field below. Take the small street that runs to the right of Via Del Sole. A short walk along this road and past the gate is pleasant. The scent of lavender, rosemary, and plants from the Tuscan countryside fills the air. The view of the Torre del Mangia and Piazza del Mercato is fantastic from this peaceful spot.

The Pecci Garden was built between 1326 and 1420 and is one of the best-preserved green spaces of medieval Siena. Today, the walls enclose green areas between Porta Romana and Porta Pipsini. L’Orto de’Pecci comprises an authentic restaurant and bar, nAll'Orto de'Pecci.

The Orto de’ Pecci, situated in the Porta Giustizia valley, is one of the best-preserved nature reserves within Siena’s city walls. A green lung that encompasses centuries of history. In the early 14th century, the Borgo di Santa Maria stood here, but it was depopulated during the plague epidemic, or Black Death, of 1348. The valley was subsequently converted into arable land and vegetable gardens, bearing witness to the changing crops and agricultural techniques from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Later, the gardens were incorporated into the former psychiatric hospital, where ‘the mentally ill’ could work and receive occupational therapy. Today, this tradition is continued with an organic vegetable garden, a medieval vegetable garden and a medieval vineyard. The cooperative, which has managed the Orto de’ Pecci since 1983, has always been committed to the territorial and cultural revitalisation of the area, including by organising guided tours for schools, groups and families to discover both the historical and social aspects of this unique place.

Val di Montone

One of the contrade of the Palio is the Contrada di Valdimontone.

According to legend, the name of the district is derived from Montorio, a Roman leader who came to the area to besiege the sons of Remo, Senio and Aschio, who were hiding in Castelvecchio, the first ancient center of Siena, after fleeing Rome to escape the wrath of their uncle Romulus. The area is therefore also known as di Castelmontorio.

A beautiful way to explore the Val di Montone (the valley of the ram) is this walk that starts and ends at the Porta Romano.

It is also our favorite restaurant in Siena because of its location (and a good place to start your visit to Siena).

Het natuurhuisje Podere Santa Pia, Castiglioncello Bandini

The Podere Santa Pia holiday cottage is situated in Castiglioncello Bandini, a small village in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, just south of Montalcino.
The cottage is authentically Italian and full of character. The rough-hewn natural stone walls on the outside, the terracotta floors, the large open fireplace in the kitchen and, here and there, sturdy wooden beamed ceilings create a characteristic old Tuscan atmosphere. The simple interior and minimalist touches perfectly complement the simplicity of the Tuscan country houses of yesteryear. The house has everything you need for a wonderful holiday. The kitchen features an original Tuscan open fireplace, a ‘caminetto’, ideal for culinary explorations.

Podere Santa Pia is an ideal place for peace and relaxation, set in natural and at times wild surroundings. The Tuscan Maremma is one of the most unique and fascinating areas of Tuscany, not yet overrun by mass tourism. Nature has blessed this land in a way that appeals to the senses: at times, it feels as though the design of everything around you is perfect and has remained unchanged through the centuries. Looking out over the valley where the Orcia and Ombrone rivers converge, you’ll be enchanted by Podere Santa Pia’s exceptional location and the beauty of the landscape. Rolling hills dotted with olive trees and vineyards, and the untamed beauty of nature that has remained untouched for decades.
