Val d'Orcia | The newly built pedestrian bridge over the Orcia River near Bagno Vignoni

We recommend a walk along the Francigena path and the pedestrian wooden bridge on the Orcia river. Walk directly out of Bagno Vignoni and descend to the Orcia River. There used to be a Roman bridge over the Orcia, but the bridge that was swept away in the great floods of 1929.
This was once an important crossing, connecting the castle of Ripa with those of Rocca d’Orcia and Castiglione d'Orcia. The road now crosses on a modern bridge a bit further down river, but an impressive arched wooden pedestrian bridge has been built on top of the old foundations.

One of Tuscany's best kept secrets is the beautiful valley sheltering this recently renovated 18th century farm house, Podere Santa Pia. This former small cloister is the perfect spot to slow travel. Waking up at dawn to start hiking, learning once again the names of flowers and trees, and above all, having the pleasure of getting lost, forgetting about guides, clocks and timetables.
Podere Santa Pia is surrounded by a lovely wild garden, tall cypress trees line the property and hidden in a nearby corner is the large swimming pool overlooking the rolling hills of the Tuscan Maremma.
